White Gravy Recipe: Creamy, Peppery

Creamy, peppery white gravy that tastes like classic Southern comfort. This quick homemade favorite turns any biscuit or dinner plate into something unforgettable.

Ingredients
  

4 tbsp unsalted butter (56 g)

4 tbsp all-purpose flour (30 g)

3 cups whole milk (720 ml)

1 tsp kosher salt (4 g)

1–1½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper (3–4 g)

Optional: pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika

Optional: ½ cup cooked sausage crumbles (75 g)

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
    Whisk in flour and cook 2–3 minutes until lightly golden.
    Add warm milk slowly, whisking constantly to keep the mixture smooth.
    Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until thick and creamy.
    Season with salt and pepper, adjusting to taste.
    Stir in sausage if using, then serve warm.
